Statuette of Child-Granting Avalokitesvara

CHINA; Ming dynasty

Avalokitesvara is depicted sitting on a rock and holding a child. The Bodhisattva’s hair is tied up and covered by a hood. Avalokitesvara has a high forehead, half-closed eyes, a delicate nose, a small mouth, and large ears. A loose-fitting outer robe with long sleeves flows down to the feet, and the child stands on the Bodhisattva’s knee and is also dressed in a long robe. The face of the child is delicately sculpted with an adorable appearance. The child has the palms joined in reverence.
