Seated Buddha

Seated Buddha

CHINA; Ming dynasty

The Buddha has a gem located before a gently sloping usnisa that is virtually indistinguishable. The figure sits in full lotus position with the head slightly lowered and eyes half closed in tranquil meditation. The hands are holding a wish-fulfilling jewel. The Buddha wears a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare, revealing the reverse swastika symbol on the chest and a lotus-like under-robe. The bracelet on the right arm is a novel addition. The double lotus throne is supported by a Sumeru throne with hollow insets. The whole statue is glazed in yellowish white, a distinct product from Zhangzhou pottery. An inscription is found on the underside, dating the statue to 1615 and stating that it was dedicated to Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou.
