Shuangta Qingshou Temple Haiyun Pagoda: Hat of Master Haiyun

CHINA, Beijing; Yuan dynasty

This Yuan dynasty embroidered hat was recovered from the base of Haiyun Pagoda at Shuangta Qingshou Temple when it was being demolished. According to the Vinaya tradition, monks are allowed to wear head coverings in winter time.
The pointed hat has cloud and flame patterns, embroidered in light brown on a dark brown background. It has a light beaded pattern along its edges. The background of the embroidery is damaged and the glittering decoration has faded. However, the excellent craftsmanship and design are still evident, making it a fine example of a monk’s hat from the Yuan dynasty.
