Hanshan and Shide in a Boat

CHINA; Ming dynasty

Created by Zhu Sansong, this sculpture of Hanshan and Shide depicts the two infamous Tang dynasty (618–907) monks in a lotus petal-shaped boat. The scene expresses the essence of true companionship.
Both figures have smiles which are broad and bright. Hanshan sits on the left side and paddles the boat with a large oar; Shide is positioned to the right, holding a fan in his right hand and playing with a spider with his left. Hanshan is clad in a loose robe that covers one shoulder and reveals the muscles of his upper body. Shide, on the other hand, is completely covered by his robe.
