Sanya: Avalokitesvara of the Sea

CHINA, Hainan, Sanya

This Avalokitesvara statue is located on an artificial island and was built between 1999 and 2005. The figure incorporates three bodies, one facing inland and the other two looking over the South China Sea. The three figures are distinguished by the attributes held in the hands: a sutra, prayer beads, and a lotus. The figures wear a headdress but are otherwise dressed plainly and stand on a lotus pedestal with 108 petals. A 1,500 sq m hall is located within the supporting base under the lotus.
