Ink and color on paper
This illustrated manuscript of the “Universal Gateway Chapter” of the Lotus Sutra dates from the late 9th or early 10th century. The text describes how Avalokitesvara appears in different forms to rescue people from danger if they call upon the Bodhisattva with devotion. Illustrations occupy the upper register of each page. They are composed of black ink lines made with a wood or reed pen, and are sparingly colored with red and yellow.
