Mogao Cave 17: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Print on paper

Mogao Cave 17: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Five Dynasties

This picture was printed from a woodblock, filled in with color, and mounted on blue paper decorated with floral designs. It was found in Mogao Cave 17 beside another print and a string of coins.
Avalokitesvara, wearing a tall headdress and holding a large lotus flower, sits on a lotus throne and gazes downwards serenely. The body is covered with a stole and beaded ornaments. Flame patterns surround the nimbus and the aureole. Clouds are painted beneath the lotus throne. The central figure is flanked by two inscriptions within cartouches that rest on lotus flowers.
