Ink and color on silk
According to the inscription and signature in the lower left corner that are only visible under strong beams of light, this painting was done by Chen Yongzhi. However, the picture bears a strong resemblance to some of the work of the Northern Song dynasty painter Yuchi Yiseng. There are no other existing paintings by Chen Yongzhi for comparison, leaving open the possibility that this is a copy of one of Yuchi Yiseng’s works.
Sakyamuni Buddha is given the appearance of a monk from Central Asia, with a beard and a red monastic robe with thick folds. Holding a fruit in his left hand, the Buddha walks past a blooming tree. The painting is simply drawn but beautifully colored. The paper frame indicates that it was once kept in Tianxiang Temple during the Song dynasty (960–1279).
