Life of the Buddha - Parinirvana

This is the lower section of a larger relief depicting the parinirvana of the Buddha. Mourning figures are at the foot of the bed where the Buddha lies. The folds of the bed drape the background. Vajradhara is collapsed on the floor in deep distress on the far left. His left arm is raised dramatically over his head while his vajra lies abandoned at his side. Another figure is supporting him. Beyond Vajradhara is a mustached disciple with one hand on the heart and the other reaching up in a show of emotion. Next to the mustached disciple is a top-knotted figure with head bowed in his weeping. Subhadra, in contrast, sits quietly in meditation, a wanderer’s bundle on a tripod nearby.
