Jakushoji Temple: Mirror with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

JAPAN, Yamagata, Tendo; Kamakura period

From an inscription on the back, it is known that Fujiwara Matsuna dedicated this mirror to Jakushoji Temple. It was listed as an Important Cultural Property in 1938.
In the center of the round mirror, there is a relief of Avalokitesvara, which was cast separately. The Bodhisattva is seated in full lotus position on a multi-layer lotus throne. The rim of the mirror is decorated with a series of embossed diamonds, and there are rings on either side which are embedded in images of chrysanthemums.
Avalokitesvara has a tall headdress. The left hand holds a lotus bud, while the right hand is raised in front of the chest forming the vitarka (teaching) mudra. Behind the image is a nimbus and a aureole.
