Life of the Buddha - Birth of Prince Siddhartha

PAKISTAN

The upper border of the relief is decorated with a floral design and delimited on the left by the squared version of the Corinthian column common in Gandharan art. Queen Maya is at the center, holding onto branches of the asoka tree and supported by her sister Mahaprajapati. Prince Siddhartha emerges from the queen’s right side into the waiting arms of Sakra. Behind Sakra are celebrating heavenly beings, while behind Mahaprajapati are ladies-in-waiting holding fans and water vessels. At the feet of Queen Maya and Sakra is another representation of the prince taking the seven steps after his birth.
