Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with Attendants

Line drawing on paper

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Attendants

CHINA; Qing dynasty

In this drawing, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is shown sitting on the back of an auspicious creature flanked by Sangharama, Skanda, Sudhana, Nagakanya, and the Four Heavenly Kings. The Bodhisattva has a peaceful expression, wears a headdress, and has a simple nimbus around the head. Swirling clouds fill the background. Fine, delicate lines and careful shading result in lively, detailed figures.
