Potala Palace Red Palace: Tenth Dalai Lama

Tsultrim Gyatso, the Tenth Dalai Lama, died too young to establish his individual mark. This rare statue has been dressed in rich brocades, with ritual instruments placed before it. The figure is portrayed as round-faced and wide-eyed, and wears the hood of a high lama. The right hand is raised in the vitarka (teaching) mudra while holding the stalk of a lotus that supports a scripture. Above this stands a sword. These attributes are generally associated with Manjusri, the Bodhisattva of wisdom, rather than the lotus-bearing Padmapani Avalokitesvara, thought to be the manifestation source of all Dalai Lamas.
