Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Gilt bronze

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty

The Bodhisattva stands on an inverted lotus pedestal with hands in the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras. The figure wears a three-leaf crown with ribbons draped on either side. Jewelry hangs the length of the body. A stole falls from the shoulders to curl over the pedestal. The petal-shaped mandorla is decorated with flames around the edges while its center is smooth. Beneath the pedestal, there is a plain, four-legged stand with an inscription stating that the family of Zheng Luoxing dedicated the statue in 554 on behalf of their parents from Yanzhou in present day Hebei.
