Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA; Eastern Wei dynasty

The Bodhisattva is depicted standing on a semicircular pedestal incised with lotus petals and supported on top of a four-legged stand. Inscriptions on the stand date the statue to 536 of the Eastern Wei dynasty.
The figure is enclosed in a flame-shaped mandorla engraved with swirling, stylized flames. A lotus patterned nimbus is around the head of the slender figure. The Bodhisattva wears a broad-sleeved robe, the hem and skirt of which flare outward.
