Mogao Cave 17: Longevity Bodhisattva

Ink and color on linen

Mogao Cave 17: Longevity Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Song dynasty

This late 10th century banner is composed of a piece of linen woven with eight horizontal and seven vertical threads per square centimeter. The banner is well preserved except for some loose threads on the right edge.
A seated Buddha is painted on the triangular headpiece, while the body of the banner features a standing Bodhisattva, identified by an inscription next to the nimbus as Longevity Bodhisattva. Standing on a lotus throne, the Bodhisattva wears golden ornaments and displays a mudra with both hands. The figure, painted mainly in orange and red, covers the banner, leaving little unused space.
