Zhai Yan

CHINA; Tang dynasty

A disciple of the famous Tang dynasty painter Wu Daozi, Zhai Yan’s strengths were in painting and coloring the Buddha. His works were inherently similar to that of his teacher’s. Frequently, Wu allow Zhai to complete the coloring work after he finished his drawings.
According to Famous Paintings in History, the mural on the western corridor of West Chan Courtyard at Jing’ai Temple in Henan was the work of Wu Daozi in 722; the image included sutra illustrations that were colored by Zhai. Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings listed four paintings by Zhai which include Tianzun, Taishang, Mahamayuri Bodhisattva, and Heavenly King.
