Hotan: Bodhisattva in a Lotus

CHINA, Xinjiang, Hotan

This artifact may have been used as a decoration on the wall of a temple, or on the mandorla of a Buddha statue.
The decorative piece depicts a Bodhisattva emerging from the center of a blossoming lotus flower. Only the upper body, with arms raised, is shown. The hair is coiled in a topknot and the figure wears large earrings and a neck ornament that encircles the breast area. Behind the head, there is a radiating nimbus with a raised edge.
