Fayun Temple: Buddha Triad

CHINA, Henan, Xinxiang; Eastern Wei dynasty

A robed Buddha stands with his right hand in abhaya (fearlessness) and left hand pointing downwards, which are also made by Bodhisattvas on either side. The style of the Buddha is believed to have been either from the Northern Wei (386–534) or Northern Qi (550–577) dynasties, although the bulkiness of the figure more resembles those attributed to the Eastern Wei dynasty (534–550).
An inscription dated 544 is engraved on the pedestal that forms the base. It explains why Li Hongyan commissioned the statue and offered his property to fund it.
