Child-Granting Avalokitesvara

Ink and color on paper

Child-Granting Avalokitesvara

CHINA; Qing dynasty

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sits in a royal ease posture on the back of a lion, cradling an infant. The Bodhisattva wears a headdress, armlets, bracelets, and beaded ornaments. A green stole is draped over the arms. The long hair of the Bodhisattva appears to blow in the wind. Carefully painted lines of varying thicknesses are used to suggest different textures. The mane and tail of the lion are especially detailed. The dull colors and the empty background create a sense of peace and tranquility.
