Samantabhadra Bodhisattva

CHINA; Liao dynasty

The Bodhisattva is seated on a lotus in the relaxation posture with one foot resting on a lotus while the elephant mount also paces forward on four lotuses. Samantabhadra is traditionally regarded as the protector of the Lotus Sutra and represents the practical aspect of the Dharma. The figure’s hands are forming mudras. The Bodhisattva wears stoles that wind around the arms and a necklace of many strands over the breast plates. The six-tusked elephant on which the Bodhisattva’s throne is mounted is bridled and saddled.
