SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Unified Silla dynasty

Unearthed from Dongcheondong in Gyeongju, the center of this tile features an image of a mythical kalavinka. The outer ring is encircled with lotus petals and the border consists of tiny pearls. The kalavinka, with a human head and a bird’s body, is said to dwell in paradise where it teaches the Dharma with its beautiful voice.
