Manjusri Bodhisattva

CHINA; Five Dynasties

Manjusri sits in the position of royal ease on a lotus saddle mounted on a lion that turns its head to gaze fiercely upward at its rider. Beside the lion on the base is the small figure of a keeper. The Bodhisattva’s right hand once held an attribute associated with the figure, the sword of wisdom that cuts through ignorance, which is now missing. The left hand rests upon the knee and holds a vase. The striking mandorla is shaped like a lotus leaf with veins radiating outward to a flattened rim. The figure is placed upon a double-tier, square-shaped, four-legged pedestal.
