Sutra holders come in various shapes, such as cylindrical, hexagonal, and octagonal. The sutra was placed in the sutra holder which was usually kept within another container made of stone or clay. The name of the sutra, date of burial, and name of donor can be found on the holder.
The base of this cylindrical sutra holder is decorated with an eight-petal inverted lotus pattern. In the center, there are Sanskrit seed syllables. The round and flat lid is surmounted by a three-tier structure resembling a pagoda.
