Bosalsa Temple: Pair of Standing Buddhas

SOUTH KOREA, North Chungcheong, Cheongju; Goryeo dynasty

This pair of standing Buddhas discovered in 1970 at Bosalsa Temple, is carved in relief on a single stone. It is inferred from the simple sculptural style that the work was created during the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392). The close positioning and symmetry of the figures suggest the partnership of Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna related in the “Chapter on the Emergence of the Prabhutarana Pagoda” of the Lotus Sutra, although such figures are usually shown seated.
