With a Non-Discriminating Mind, Chan is Everywhere

White-character square seal

With a Non-Discriminating Mind, Chan is Everywhere

CHINA; Qing dynasty

The title of this five character seal conveys the ideal that when one’s perceptions are cleared of one-sided perspectives, the teachings of Chan appear everywhere. Arranged in two columns, the sizes and style of each character vary. The text was carved in a bold script that encompasses the majority of the seal. Additionally, the artist deliberately left no border in order to make the layout appear even more spacious. The resulting seal emanates a style that is simple, sturdy, and profound.
Huang Lu was an artist born in Shexian, Anhui during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). He was also known by the names Chihuang and Fengliu Shanren. Huang learned the art of seal engraving from his father, Huang Baishan, at the age of 15. His carving style was vigorous and refined, resembling the ancient seal style of the Qin dynasty (221–207 BCE).
