Buddha Cabinet

Red-character square seal

Buddha Cabinet

CHINA

This large two-character seal displays a bold, forceful, and resolute style. The layout borrows characteristics from Han seals and is both “wide enough for a horse to gallop through, and so close that a needle cannot be contained.” As a whole, the seal is tight in the center while broad on the fringe, displaying a playful and simple sentiment within its sturdy composition. In technique, the carving is direct and strong with a vigorous and firm ambiance.
Qi Baishi had an original name of Chunzhi and was also known as Weiqing. A renowned master of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal engraving, he was honored by the World Peace Council as an eminent person of world culture.
