Precepts and Wisdom as the Dharma Wall

White-character square seal

Precepts and Wisdom as the Dharma Wall

CHINA; Qing dynasty

As stated in the Dharmapada, “Attentiveness enhances firm upholding; adhere to the parameters set by the Dharma as one would the city wall. Diligence is difficult to destroy, following the precepts aids in attaining wisdom.” Hence, the title: “Precepts and Wisdom as the Dharma Wall.”
Seven characters comprise this seal, which features a square layout with three even and straight columns. The characters are dispersed among the surface in an orderly and methodical manner, creating a well-balanced and strong design. Strokes are carved quickly in sharp and clean cuts, using the big chopping cut technique and leaving minimal signs of broken cuts. Ding Jing commented that the technique employed was profound and elegant. Overall, the piece can be said to be simple and sturdy with a touch of vigor that adds to the eccentricity.
Li Deguang was a native of Songjiang, Shanghai. Fond of epigraphy, he excelled in copying ancient bronze, jade, and ivory seals. Ding Jing was a close friend of Li’s and was said to have greatly admired his seal engraving methods. His works were compiled in the Seal Collections of Feihongtang.
