Praise to the Painting of Gongzhong Pagoda

CHINA; Ming dynasty

This scroll, written by Yu Qian, was composed by monk Pulang of Xizhao Temple in Beijing. It is a 19-line praise to the painting, Gongzhong Pagoda, which was painted by Pulang’s teacher, Guzhuojun. The diligent Guzhuojun spent over 30 years in reclusive practice. He once advised followers that, “to see one’s true nature, one must strive to be courageous and perseverant in practice and go beyond the boundaries of life and death.”
There is a sense of fluency and ease, as well as a clear rhythm in articulation. Attention is given to the placement of each brushstroke, particularly the forceful and extensive diagonal downward strokes. The character structure is stable, while the style is refined.
Yu Qian, also known as Tingyi or Jie’an, was a poet and writer who excelled in calligraphy. Yu was esteemed for his righteous character as a court official for over 30 years.
