Life of the Buddha - Birth of Prince Siddhartha

NEPAL

The openwork relief was once part of a column supporting a temple roof. It depicts Queen Maya giving birth to Prince Siddhartha under a flowering tree in Lumbini Garden.
The queen wears a crown and a high topknot. Her upper body is bare but adorned with jewelry and a long stole that winds down her arm and loops across her skirt. The queen stands in tribhanga posture, which is reinforced by the bending branch to which she clings, gives movement to the composition. The newborn prince emerges from her right side, while Sakra kneels at the bottom with his hands ready to receive him.
