Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 149

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu

Situated in the central section of the Beishan site, this rectangular cave has a flat ceiling and measures 3.22 m wide, 3.43 m high, and 3.46 m deep. There is an inscription on the north wall stating that the image of Cintamanicakra Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was commissioned by Ren Zhongyi and his wife Du in 1128 during the Southern Song dynasty.
The main carving on the back (east) wall is a statue of Cintamanicakra Avalokitesvara sitting in full lotus position on a lotus throne atop a raised octagonal base. The Bodhisattva wears a tall headdress containing a Buddha image, a flowing robe, and chest ornaments. One hand holds a lotus while the other forms a mudra. Painted onto the wall behind the figure are a round aureole and flame-shaped nimbus. Above the nimbus there is a stone canopy.
Smaller carvings of Avalokitesvara seated in full lotus positions on lotus thrones are on either side of the central Bodhisattva. These figures are similar to the central carving in clothing and appearance; however, the Avalokitesvara on the right holds a vase and willow branch, while the figure on the left holds a jewel in both hands. Four heavenly generals are depicted beside the heads of the Bodhisattvas. Standing on each side of the Bodhisattvas are two figures making offerings.
The south and north walls of the cave are covered with three tiers of Dharma protectors, 37 in total. These figures wear various types of clothing and hold a variety of objects.
