White-character square seal
This contemporary rotating-character seal praising the Avatamsaka Sutra was carved by Tong Danian at the age of 51. The compact layout of the four characters within their square configuration enhances the sturdiness of the overall seal and character forms. Zhejiang school methodology is evident in the straight and forceful cuts paired with rigid strokes. These two features in combination with one another uniquely reveal an essence of simplicity and tenderness. As a whole, the seal is steady and powerful, while dignified and uncompromising.
A native of Shanghai, Tong Danian was an accomplished seal engraver and calligrapher, he was well-versed in the Six Categories of Chinese Characters. He was particularly adept in seal and clerical scripts and his seal works utilized ancient methods. Additionally, Tong emulated the works of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, integrating the styles found on stone tablet inscriptions. His cutting methods are meticulous and powerful, creating compositions that exude a sense of spirituality.
