Gumyoji Temple: Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara

JAPAN, Kanagawa, Yokohama; Heian period

The Avalokitesvara is the main statue in Gumyoji Temple. It is listed as an Important Cultural Property.
The standing Bodhisattva is carved entirely from a single block of beech wood. The round proportions of the face and torso, apart from the back, are scored by the regular horizontally carved lines which are the statue’s distinguishing feature. The figure’s main head wears a crown surrounded by ten other heads and surmounted by one more. The left hand holds a vase containing a single lotus bud while the right hand hangs down, the wrist wound by the turn of a stole. The statue’s slender elegance suggests that it is an artwork from the late 11th century.
