Amitabha Buddha Pentad

According to the inscription at the bottom, this painting dates from 1330. The central figure, Amitabha Buddha, sits in full lotus position on a throne. Appearing dignified and composed, Amitabha forms a mudra. The Buddha is flanked by Ananda on the right and Mahakasyapa on the left. Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta sit on lotus thrones at the bottom of the picture. Avalokitesvara, dressed in an ornate robe, has a round face with big eyes and a prominent nose. The Bodhisattva wears a headdress decorated with a Buddha image and holds a willow branch. Mahasthamaprapta, dressed in similar attire, holds a lotus that supports a sutra.
