Seated Bodhisattva

Seated Bodhisattva

CHINA; Sui dynasty

The Bodhisattva is seated with legs pendent and feet resting upon a lotus pedestal. The hair is swept into a peacock tail topknot that is fronted with the image of a meditating Buddha. This element identifies the figure as Avalokitesvara, although it cannot be confirmed because of damage to the hands that might have carried associated attributes. The replicated ornaments on the necklace and belt around the narrow waist are disc-like. Stoles fall from the shoulders and drape the arms. The thin skirt curves below the pedestal and is molded about the legs.
