Life of the Buddha

PAKISTAN

The relief depicts scenes from the Life of the Buddha before his Great Departure. Each scene is divided by a square adaptation of the Corinthian column and the fragment is broken.
The section on the left depicts Palace Life. Prince Siddhartha and his wife, Princess Yasodhara, are attended by a musician and a lady-in-waiting. The episode of the Four Encounters is on the right side. The prince rides into the city on a horse, accompanied by a servant. A sick man with a huge abdomen is seen slumped on the ground. Behind the man is another figure, probably a relative, attending the recumbent figure. Beyond this, moving to the right, is another depiction of the prince on a horse but, since the rest of the panel is broken, the other encounters remain incomplete.
