Buddha Teaching the Dharma

PAKISTAN; Kushan period

The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a lotus throne under the Bodhi tree while forming a mudra. The figure on the Buddha’s left is Maitreya Bodhisattva who holds a vase. The figure on the Buddha’s right is badly damaged but it is thought to be Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The two smaller figures at the back are Brahma and Sakra. Brahma has hair tied in a knot, while Sakra wears a jeweled crown and holds a vajra. The presence of Brahma and Sakra with the Buddha was common in Gandhara. The inclusion of Avalokitesvara and Maitreya Bodhisattvas later developed into the popular Buddha Triad.
