Ratnapani Bodhisattva

Gilt copper alloy

Ratnapani Bodhisattva

NEPAL

Ratnapani wears a three-leaf crown above a gem-inlaid topknot from which locks of hair fall over the shoulders. The Bodhisattva is adorned with a few pieces of jewelry as well as a wide sash across the upper body. A jeweled belt secures the skirt beneath, from which pleated folds emerge from between the legs. The figure is seated in the posture of royal ease upon a double lotus throne. The left hand rests on the knee and holds the long stem of a lotus flower on which rests the large jewel from which Ratnapani gains the name, “Jewel-bearer.” The right hand is extended and holds the Bodhisattva’s other attribute, a moon disc.
