The content of this sutra manuscript, written by Master Hongyi when he was 57 years old, is a gatha from the “Chapter on Bhadrapala” in the Avatamsaka Sutra. The chapter demonstrates the inconceivable merit of generating the aspiration for enlightenment through adherence to the Bodhisattva vows.
The calligraphy was skillfully written in center tip and each stroke commences slowly and carefully. Force of movement was constrained within the structured composition, producing even and meticulous strokes. Characters are slightly elongated with ample spacing between each. Slanted and sinuous strokes are executed, and are suggestive of a tranquil and refined state.
Master Hongyi’s original name was Li Wentao, and he was also known as Shutong. A 20th century eminent monk of the Nanshan Vinaya school, he was strict on observing the precepts. He was a skilled painter, calligrapher, and arts educator. Transcribing sutras was one of Hongyi’s vows after joining the monastic order, and during the 25 year period prior to his parinirvana, he produced innumerable copies of the Buddhist scriptures. His calligraphic works, created during his later years in particular, were subtle and delicate. Hongyi aspired to focus solely on creating positive connections with others through his calligraphy.
