Sarnath: Standing Buddha

Sandstone

Sarnath: Standing Buddha

INDIA, Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi

Buddha characteristics in the statue include the flat usnisa, curly hair, elongated earlobes, three lines on the neck, and webbing between the fingers. The right hand is in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra, while the left hand grasps a fold of the monastic robe. The treatment of the diaphanous garment has the Sarnath characteristic of putting details in the folds over the wrists, and the curve of the material over the shins. The rather plain design of the statue is offset by the nimbus. A plain center is succeeded by a broad foliated band with a pearled rim on either side, finished with a scalloped edge.
