Yongzuo Temple Great Hero Hall: Child-Granting Avalokitesvara

CHINA, Shanxi, Taiyuan; Ming dynasty

The “Universal Gateway of Avalokitesvara” in the Lotus Sutra lists, among the other benefits, that any women wishing for a child should pray to the Bodhisattva, a practice perpetuated in China to this day. The statue was moved to its present location in 1985. The Bodhisattva is not depicted wearing the usual headdress but the head is covered with a shawl. The figure sits on a throne with legs pendent and crossed at the ankles. An infant is cradled in the crook of the right arm and attendants stand on either side with their hands raised in reverence.
