Mathura: Standing Buddha

Mathura: Standing Buddha

INDIA, Uttar Pradesh, Mathura

The Buddha is depicted with large curls and a high usnisa. The round face has an obvious double chin and elongated earlobes, while the down-turned eyes and arched eyebrows are sharply carved. Despite considerable damage to the nimbus, the ornate details are still visible. Patterns span from a lotus in the center to scrolling plants, a patterned flower garland, a beaded surround giving way to a scalloped border.
The Buddha wears a thin monastic robe over both shoulders. It is covered with shallow ripples and deep folds over the arms are ruffled below. The clinging material reveals the contours of the sturdy body and legs. The right forearm is broken but the hand was most probably in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra, while the left hand grasps a corner of the garment.
