Maitreya Bodhisattva

NEPAL

The statue was first cast, then the repoussé technique was applied to achieve finer details. The absorbed figure is seated in full lotus position and has a dome-shaped topknot with a stupa ornament, which identifies the statue as being Maitreya. Another indicator is the hands that are held in Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. About the head is a beaded band, and more beads rim the highly detailed neck ornament, arm pieces, and belt. A buoyant stole flies in an arc behind the neck and about the arms. The skirt, secured by a belt, drapes naturally about the legs.
