Java: Standing Buddha

INDONESIA, East Java, Jember

The statue was unearthed from Jember in East Java and some scholars believe the style was adapted from the Indian Amaravati style that spread through Southeast Asia via Sri Lanka. The Buddha has clustered curls topped by a distinctive gilded usnisa. The figure has a direct gaze and a long straight nose above a small mouth. The three lines are visible on the neck. The long body has broad shoulders and a slim waist, with a monastic robe worn over the left shoulder and the folds crossing diagonally.
