Praise of the Buddha Relics

JAPAN; Kamakura period

Listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, this is a work of Chan Master Daxiu Zhengnian, scripted at age 64 when he was abbot of Engakuji Temple in Kamakura. Totaling 77 lines, the scroll was intended for Hojo Tokimune, the then de facto ruler of the Kamakura shogunate, imploring him to support the construction of the Relic Hall at the temple. Master Daixiu details the origin of the Buddha relics that were given to the temple, and further denotes the merits of worshiping the relics, giving reason for the necessity of a hall to house them.
Displaying the prevalent brushwork style of Zhang Jizhi, this work also features firm strokes and expansive character formation in the style of Huang Tingjian’s calligraphy.
Daxiu Zhengnian, who was also known in Japan as Daikyu Shonen, was a Chan master of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism, as well as a disciple of Chan Master Shiqi Xinyue. He traveled to Japan in 1269 and subsequently served as abbot of various temples including Zenkoji, Kenchoji, and Juhukuji temples. In addition, he was the founder of Jochiji Temple. After his passing, he was granted the posthumous title of Zen Master Butsugen.
