Taiyin Temple South Hall: Reclining Buddha

CHINA, Shanxi, Yuncheng; Jin dynasty

This 4 m long and 1.5 m high, Buddha statue is located within a wooden niche three bays wide. The Buddha’s head rests upon his right hand while his left arm extends along the body. The head is turned to look serenely upward with a fixed gaze. The monastic robe covers both shoulders and its raised folds descend in a regular pattern to the feet placed side by side. The background is a later addition painted in 1372 during the Ming dynasty. The painting depicts male and female devotees in Chinese dress. The top of the niche is crowned, and a lotus and lotus petal patterns are drawn along its base.
