Chongguang Temple: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Hebei, Baoding; Sui dynasty

The statue was originally kept in Chongguang Temple and is one of the attendants of the Amitabha Buddha currently displayed in the British Museum. It was listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1978.
Avalokitesvara stands on an inverted lotus pedestal and wears a three-leaf crown fronted by a standing Buddha. A long bead ornament that loops down the sides of the intricately detailed skirt hangs from the Bodhisattva’s neck. The work has suffered some damage and the nimbus is missing.
Inscriptions on the pedestal state the statue was the joint effort of monastics and lay Buddhists in the year 585.
