Ajanta Cave 26: Life of the Buddha - Parinirvana

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad

This 7.27 m long reclining Buddha is found on the left wall of the main hall. The Sutra on the Buddha’s Bequeathed Teaching describes the Buddha’s last teaching and passing into parinirvana. The relief dramatically depicts this scene.
The Buddha reclines in the lion posture. His face appears calm and serene. Heavenly beings gather above him with one of them hitting a drum. The Buddha’s disciples are seated below him. Their sorrow is evident and movingly rendered.
