Yufo Temple Reclining Buddha Hall: Reclining Buddha

CHINA, Shanghai; Qing dynasty

The statue was imported from Myanmar in 1882 by the first abbot Huigeng. The Buddha reclines on his right side, with the right hand supporting the head. The other arm lies along the thigh, which is slightly bent to overlap the leg. A band encrusted with precious gems runs along the hairline and a larger stone is at the crest of the mounded usnisa. The monastic robe is worn to leave the right shoulder bare, its material adapting itself to the shape of the body. Despite being in the reclining position, the Buddha is not presented like other usual depictions of him which are in the posture of repose. Here, he is depicted with opened eyes and a smiling face.
