Naesosa Temple: Frontispiece of the Lotus Sutra

SOUTH KOREA, North Jeolla, Buan; Joseon dynasty

This frontispiece, listed as Treasure No. 278 in 1963, is part of a seven-fascicle version of the Lotus Sutra produced in 1415. The text of the sutra is all written in the same calligraphic script with black ink on white paper, while the frontispieces are gold ink woodblock prints, each illustrating a scene from the sutra or a Buddhist story.
On the right, the Buddha and his disciples are assembled on a wooden platform. Flanked by standing Bodhisattvas, the Buddha sits behind an altar. He raises one hand, appearing to teach the Dharma. Kneeling disciples join their palms and face towards the Buddha. Small seated figures are depicted on the left side of the image. The background is filled with dots, fine lines, and clouds. The border of the frontispiece is decorated with vajras.
